Photoshoot Den Haag 2022 โ€“ Artist Portrait Series

๐Ÿ“ Concept & Context

This was my first professional portrait session, conceived as a spatial dialogue between personal practice, architectural history, and urban scale.

Rather than studio backdrops, we mapped the shoot across sites that defined my time in The Hague: my own apartment, a historic diplomatic building, and a monumental highway interchange. Each location offered a different lens on identity, place, and the intersection of the intimate and the infrastructural.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Locations & Visual Narrative

Haags Stijl Apartment & Home Studio

Shot in a 1920s building designed in the Haags Stijl (Hague School of Architecture) styleโ€”a Dutch modernist movement known for its geometric brickwork, simplified massing, and early expressionist tendencies. The space functioned as both domestic environment and creative workspace, grounding the series in lived artistic practice.

Former U.S. Diplomatic Building Facade

The building's restrained institutional architecture, symmetrical stonework, and historic diplomatic presence created a layered backdrop. Its formal gravity offered a quiet counterpoint to the more dynamic urban sequences, bridging personal narrative with architectural legacy.

A4/A12 Highway Interchange

A concrete labyrinth of ramps, overpasses, and sweeping curves that echoes the scale of cinematic infrastructure. Both Mart and I had long wanted to shoot here; its layered geometry and human-scale movement against monumental form became a visual metaphor for navigation within complex systemsโ€”both urban and creative.

๐Ÿ“ธ Photographic Approach

The session balanced spontaneity with structural intention. Mart's architectural eye guided natural light, framing, and spatial composition, while my presence shifted between observer, subject, and inhabitant.

The resulting portraits treat location not as backdrop, but as co-author โ€” exploring how place shapes identity, memory, and creative practice.
