🌍 Concept & Inspiration

During a research trip to Portugal, I encountered the words of artist Navid Navab: "Seemingly chaos gives life into a system. The unpredictable, surprising behaviours." This idea resonated deeply with my long-standing interest in micro-scale chaotic processes—particularly those that occur during cooking. It inspired me to bridge culinary arts with digital fabrication, asking: What happens when we treat a 3D printer not as a production tool, but as a kinetic canvas for edible matter?

⚙️ Installation Mechanics

A repurposed 3D printer served as both plating surface and moving stage. Its motion algorithms were directly mapped to cultural motifs and physical processes from Portuguese cuisine:

🍽️ Culinary Execution

The printer did not print food itself; instead, it functioned as a living plating platform. A carefully composed 3-course menu featuring Portuguese ingredients and recipes was physically placed onto the moving print bed. As the machine traced its paths, temperature shifts, material interactions, and algorithmic unpredictability unfolded in real time—turning a static meal into a dynamic, site-specific performance.

🔍 Reflection

"3D Printing Food transforms the kitchen into a laboratory and the 3D printer into a conductor of controlled chaos. By mapping cultural motifs, physical processes, and algorithmic randomness onto edible matter, the work explores how we perceive order, creativity, and taste in an increasingly digitized world."
