AVARA x Oulu Sound Hack
Cross-Modal Duo Performance × 24-Speaker Spatial Installation · 2025
Oamk Campus, Finland
🌐 Event & Concept Context
The Oulu Sound Hack is an experimental workshop series where sonic artists explore improvised composition using non-traditional instruments and unconventional sound sources within a multi-channel audio environment.
The third edition, themed Mutual Play, invited participants to co-create live sound art through real-time exchange with another performer or system. As part of the AVARA Art&Tech festival by Oulu Metropolia University of Applied Sciences (OAMK), the event culminated in a live demo showcase across a 24-speaker spatial audio rig, featuring collaborations between OSC members and Aalto University students who built custom sound devices.
🔗 My Contribution: 3D Printer × "Guess What" Sequencer
I was paired with Ariana Marta and her custom step sequencer, Guess What. We designed a bidirectional coupling system that merged rhythmic sequencing with physical machine motion, transforming our combined setup into an improvised, self-resonating instrument.
⚙️ How It Worked
The four rows of the sequencer were mapped directly to the X, Y, Z, and extruder motors of my 3D printer. Each row was assigned a distinct acoustic sample (e.g., kick, snare, hi-hat, percussion).
When a step advanced and its indicator face rose, it triggered two simultaneous actions:
- The assigned audio sample played back
- The corresponding 3D printer motor activated in that axis
This created an immediate feedback loop: sound triggered mechanical movement, and the physical action of belts, gears, and axes generated additional, unpredictable acoustic textures. Both performers listened and adapted in real time, allowing the system's own mechanics to influence rhythm, tempo, and timbre.
🌀 Artistic Focus
The piece treated the 3D printer not as a fabrication tool, but as a kinetic sound generator and responsive performer. By merging digital sequencing with analog/mechanical motion, we explored how cross-medium coupling can foster genuine improvisation—where control is shared, outcomes remain open, and the boundary between composer, instrument, and audience dissolves through mutual play.
