DIY Electric Drum Kit Workshop
STEAM Education ร Accessible Sound Art
Kello School, Oulu ยท 2025 | Oulu2026 #STEAMeducation Initiative
๐ Concept & Context
As part of the regional #STEAMeducation initiative, Jussi Alaraasakka and I developed a series of hands-on workshops that demystify music technology and make sound art accessible to students.
The goal was simple: remove technical barriers, prioritize immediate creative feedback, and show how everyday materials can become instruments through basic electronics and open-source tools.
๐ ๏ธ Workshop Setup & Process
At Kello School (#kellokoulu), we combined their existing acoustic drum kits with MakeyMakey boards โ open-source invention platforms that turn conductive objects into USB inputs.
By attaching alligator clips to the drum pads and routing them through custom sample triggers, we transformed traditional kits into responsive electronic instruments. Students quickly learned to map different sounds to individual pads, exploring rhythm, timbre, signal routing, and live triggering without needing prior coding or audio engineering experience.

๐ฑ Educational & Creative Impact
Rather than focusing on technical precision, the workshop prioritizes play, experimentation, and shared creation. Participants engage directly with circuitry, conductive materials, and digital audio โ seeing how physical gesture translates into sound in real time.
The outcome is both practical and pedagogical: students leave with a functional DIY drum pad, a foundational understanding of signal flow and hardware triggering, and the confidence to tinker further on their own.
