Frozen People 2026
Arctic Pulse Sound Art Stage 路 Experimental Ice Instrument Performance
Frozen People Festival 2026 路 Oulu, Finland
馃 Concept & Instrument Creation
For the Arctic Pulse stage, Oulu Sound Collective presented a performance built around a custom ice kantele鈥攁 traditional Finnish string instrument reconstructed from frozen water. I designed and 3D-printed a precise mold, filled it with water, added adjustable string anchors, and left the assembly outdoors to freeze through the Finnish winter.
The instrument was conceived not as a static object, but as a time-based medium waiting for environmental conditions to become part of its score.
鉂勶笍 Performance & Adaptive Process
During the live set, unseasonably warm temperatures caused the ice kantele to begin melting in real time. Rather than interrupting the performance, this shift was embraced as compositional material.
I started with loosened, detuned strings and gradually retightened them throughout the piece, allowing ambient temperature and structural decay to dictate pitch, tension, and timbre. The performance became a dialogue between fixed intention and environmental response.
馃實 Artistic Statement & Climate Commentary
The melting kantele was not a technical failure but the core of the work. By letting rising temperatures rewrite the instrument's tuning mid-performance, I demonstrated how ecological change manifests audibly鈥攇radually, inevitably, and without human control.
"Without climate change, this piece wouldn't exist at all."
