🌊 Event Context
The 2026 Melovat Majakat (Venetian Paddle) transformed the night waterways into a large-scale light and sound procession. Over 60 illuminated kayaks and canoes glided past hundreds of spectators, complemented by choreographed fire performances, a computer-controlled lighting sequence across five vessels, and an eight-meter peacock-shaped centerpiece boat.
As part of the official Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture program, I was commissioned to create a responsive audio layer that would interact directly with the physical rhythm of the paddlers.
🎛️ Technical & Artistic Setup
I designed and deployed a real-time sensor network attached to the oars of five selected participants. Each paddle was fitted with a gyrometer that detected the precise impact ("hit") of every stroke, triggering one of two pre-mapped audio samples per paddler.
This created a distributed layer of ten distinct sonic elements activated organically by the tempo and flow of the water. Beneath this interactive layer, I composed and ran a continuous ambient soundscape to provide spatial grounding and atmospheric depth as the procession moved through the night.
💡 Audio-Visual Synchronization
The same sensor telemetry was transmitted in real time to my colleague, light artist Timo Remes, who mapped the stroke data to generate synchronized LED light patterns for each boat.
This created a direct feedback loop: physical motion shaped both the audio and visual outputs simultaneously, turning individual strokes into coordinated, site-specific media art on the water. The system remained entirely live-responsive—no pre-programmed sequences, only continuous adaptation to human rhythm and current.
📍 Program & Acknowledgments
📌 Part of: Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture official program
🙏 Special thanks to: All paddlers, spectators, and collaborators—K&C, OSM, Lappis, Olosauna, Seelari, Hehku.io, Tulikukka, and every participant—who made the event possible. The piece was realized through close technical coordination with the visual team and stands as a documentation of collective movement, sensor mapping, and real-time media improvisation.
